How do you actually know when your battery is on its way out vs just having a bad day

Asked myself this question about three times over the past month before my car finally just refused to start one morning. Each time before that it would hesitate a little, take an extra second to turn over, and I kept telling myself it was the heat or that I hadn't driven it enough that week. Classic denial I guess. When it finally gave up completely I started asking around because I wasn't sure whether to just grab whatever was available nearby or actually look for something more reliable. A coworker mentioned he'd used a trusted car battery service in Abu Dhabi a while back and had a good experience, said they tested his whole electrical system before recommending anything which made me feel like that was the smarter route rather than just swapping in a generic battery and hoping for the best. I went that way and honestly it was worth it, they told me my old battery had been running well below capacity for probably months which explains so much. What I'm actually curious about now is whether there's any realistic way to catch this earlier, like is there something you can check yourself without special equipment or is it basically just wait until something goes wrong.
